The legendary dub mixer returns to Meet the Wools in Birkenhead on Thursday 14th August.

Scientist, born Overton Brown in 1960, is a pivotal figure in the evolution of Jamaican dub music. Emerging from Harbour View near Kingston, he displayed an early aptitude for electronics, leading to an apprenticeship under King Tubby in the late 1970s. There, he quickly gained recognition for his innovative mixing style, becoming one of Jamaica’s most in-demand engineers. Working closely with the Roots Radics and producers like Henry “Junjo” Lawes, Scientist shaped some of the most iconic dub and vocal reggae recordings of the early ’80s. His experimental approach played a key role in revitalizing studios like Studio One and Channel One, although his dual affiliations sometimes created tension, particularly with Studio One’s Coxsone Dodd.
Despite never transitioning into a self-sufficient producer like Tubby or Jammy, Scientist left a lasting mark through classic dub albums such as Heavyweight Dub Champion and Scientist Meets the Space Invaders. After leaving Jamaica in 1985 amid growing instability and disillusionment, he continued to work internationally—collaborating with artists like Shaggy, Mad Professor, and even Liam Gallagher. Though less prolific in later years, his influence endures, with releases like Dub 911 and Extermination Dub showcasing his ongoing creativity and impact on global dub culture.

VENUE INFO
Future Yard is open every day from 10am – so you can stop by for a coffee or a pre-show drink in our bar area whenever you like. Our pizza kitchen is open on weekends and before every gig, 5-9pm.
The live room doors open at 7pm (this is separate from our bar area), and music starts at 7:30pm. The bar is open after the show.
